The Perfect Helen Weekend

New to the area? This is the greatest-hits weekend: a little Bavarian downtown, a little river and mountains, good food, and a taste of the local wine country.

Saturday Morning
JumpinGoat Coffee Roasters. Start with a proper local coffee before the day crowds arrive.
Downtown Helen. Wander the Bavarian shops along Main Street, and don't miss Hansel and Gretel Candy Kitchen.
Saturday Afternoon
Float the Chattahoochee. In summer, tubing straight through town is the signature Helen thing to do. Off-season, swap in Nora Mill Granary and Nacoochee Village.
Yonah Mountain Vineyards. A mountain-view tasting about 15 minutes out of town.
Saturday Evening
Nacoochee Grill or The Heidelberg. Southern-meets-mountain fare, or classic German with live oompah.
Granny's Famous Funnel Cake House. Because you are on vacation.
Sunday
Raven Cliff Falls or Unicoi State Park. Stretch your legs on a waterfall or lake trail.
Brasstown Bald. Optional drive to the highest point in Georgia for a 360-degree view.
Uhuburg Castle. Open Saturdays only, so plan ahead if it made your list.

A Rainy Day in Helen

A little weather is no reason to hole up in the cabin. Helen has more indoor fun than most people expect.

Get Competitive
Alpine Slot Cars. The largest 1/32-scale slot-car track in the country, and spectating is free.
AxeBilly. Axe throwing with instructors walking you through it. Surprisingly fun even for first-timers.
The Lost Room or MindEscapes. Escape rooms to outsmart the rain.
Stay Busy and Dry
Helen Fun Factory. Arcade energy and games under one roof.
Helen Indoor Pickleball. A few games without watching the sky.
Babyland General Hospital. About 20 minutes in Cleveland: the original Cabbage Patch Kids "hospital," pure whimsy and fully indoors.
Warm Up
Muller's Famous Fried Cheese. Exactly what it sounds like, and exactly what a gray day calls for.
Habersham Winery or Serenity Cellars. A cozy indoor tasting to close out the afternoon.

Helen with Kids

Helen is unusually kid-friendly. Here is a day that keeps everyone happy from morning to ice cream.

Morning
North Georgia Wildlife and Safari Park. Hand-feed the animals. An easy hit with little ones.
Georgia Mountain Coaster. An alpine coaster the kids control themselves.
Midday
Float the Chattahoochee. In summer, gentle family-sized floats right through town.
Outpost Gold and Gem Mining. Pan for gems and take the treasure home.
Afternoon
Helen Fun Factory. Arcade games and a break from the sun.
Sweet Stops. Hansel and Gretel Candy Kitchen, then ice cream at Das Ice Cream Cafe or Scoop-De-Scoop.
Easy Add-Ons
Babyland General Hospital. A short drive to Cleveland for Cabbage Patch whimsy.
Sweet Acre Farms. Seasonal farm fun when it is open.

Waterfalls, Wine and Views

For a day that trades the crowds for scenery: waterfalls in the morning, wine and long mountain views in the afternoon.

Morning: Get Outside
Raven Cliff Falls. A creekside trail to a one-of-a-kind waterfall that spills through a rock face.
Brasstown Bald. The highest point in Georgia. On a clear day you can see four states.
Afternoon: The Wine Trail
Yonah Mountain Vineyards. Estate tastings at the base of Mount Yonah.
CeNita and Habersham Winery. Two more easy stops on the local wine trail.
Sky Bar at Valhalla. End with a sunset and a long view.
Along the Way
Hardman Farm and Nacoochee Village. A little history and browsing between stops.

Tubing the Chattahoochee

If one thing defines summer in Helen, it is tubing the Chattahoochee. The river runs cold and shallow right through the middle of downtown, so the float is a mellow, scenic drift past the Bavarian shops, not a whitewater ride. Here is how to do it well.

When to Go
Season. Memorial Day through Labor Day, with some outfitters opening in May and running into October, weather and water level permitting.
What to expect. The water stays a refreshing 60 to 68 degrees even in July. Outfitters generally run 9 AM to 6 PM, and the float through town takes about 45 minutes to an hour.
The Outfitters
Cool River Tubing. The longtime local favorite, and the only one offering a short ride (1 to 1.5 hours) alongside the long ride (2 to 2.5 hours). Roughly 14 dollars weekdays and 18 dollars weekends, with tube, shuttle, and life jacket included. Dog-friendly. Buy tickets online to skip the line. Call (706) 878-2665.
Helen Tubing and Waterpark. Known for its pink tubes, plus a full water park with a lazy river and slides. Two-hour floats at similar prices.
Insider Tips
Beat the crowd. Arrive before 11 AM on summer weekends. Parking fills and lines build by early afternoon, with the busiest stretch from noon to 3 PM.
Pack right. Wear water shoes (the one thing everyone forgets), bring sunscreen and a waterproof phone case, and leave valuables in the car.
Know the rules. No alcohol is allowed on the river, and the Helen police enforce it. A rented push stick helps a lot when the water is low.

Oktoberfest in Helen

Helen throws the longest-running Oktoberfest in the country, and for a few weeks each fall the whole town leans into it. Here is what to know before you go.

2026 Dates
The run. September 10 through November 1. Thursday through Sunday for the first few weeks (Sept 10 to 13, 17 to 20, and 24 to 27), then nightly from October 1 through November 1, with a costume party on Halloween.
The kickoff parade. Saturday, September 12 at noon, running down Edelweiss Strasse to Main Street.
The Main Event
The Festhalle. Everything centers on the Helen Festhalle at 1074 Edelweiss Strasse. It is indoors, so it happens rain or shine, with live oompah bands, German beer, and a dance floor.
Hours and admission. Doors open at 6 PM on weekdays and 1 PM on weekends. Weekdays run more family-friendly and weekends get lively. Kids 5 and under are free, 6 to 12 are half price, and active or retired military get in free with ID.
Eat the Part
Start the morning. Pastries at Hofer's Bakery and Cafe.
Go full German. Bodensee for spaetzle, goulash, and wursts, or The Heidelberg, Hofbrauhaus, Cafe International, Troll Tavern, and Muller's Famous Fried Cheese.
Plan Ahead
Book early. This is Helen's busiest season and it overlaps peak fall foliage, so cabins fill up fast and traffic slows to a crawl on peak weekends. Reserve your stay well in advance, arrive early, and have a safe ride plan if you are drinking.

Chasing Waterfalls

The mountains around Helen are stitched with waterfalls. These three are the best mix of easy access and payoff, and all are a short drive from town. A few tips first: bring cash for the small parking fees, wear shoes with grip, and arrive early on weekends because the lots fill fast.

The Three to Start With
Anna Ruby Falls, easy and iconic. A short paved half-mile path, stroller-friendly, leading to a rare set of twin falls (153 feet and 50 feet, side by side). Reached through Unicoi State Park just north of town, with a visitor center and restrooms. Small per-person fee. Note that dogs are not allowed here.
Dukes Creek Falls, moderate and dramatic. About a 2-mile round trip off the Richard Russell Scenic Byway. It opens with a paved, accessible overlook, then switchbacks down to a multi-tiered waterfall dropping around 150 feet. Dogs welcome on a leash. Cash parking fee.
Raven Cliff Falls, a real hike. A roughly 5-mile round trip following Dodd Creek past a string of small cascades to a one-of-a-kind finale, where the water pours through a split in a granite cliff. The most rewarding of the three if you want a proper hike. Dogs welcome on a leash. Cash parking fee.

Know Before You Go

The practical stuff that makes a Helen trip smoother, from parking to cell service to bringing the dog.

Getting There
The drive. Helen is about 90 minutes north of Atlanta by way of GA-400 or I-985. Mapping apps get flaky in the mountains, so pull up your directions before you leave the interstate.
Once You're in Town
Parking. Downtown has paid public and private lots plus some street parking. On summer weekends and throughout Oktoberfest, lots fill by late morning, so arrive early or park toward the edges of town and walk in.
Bring some cash. A little cash goes a long way here. Trailhead parking fees are usually 5 dollars and often cash-only, and some tubing outfitters still prefer cash. ATMs are easy to find downtown.
Restrooms. Public restrooms are available downtown near the river and the Festhalle area.
EV charging. A handful of public chargers are in and around town, with more options in nearby Cleveland. Check PlugShare or your vehicle app for current locations before you rely on one.
Cell service. Solid downtown, spotty at trailheads and some cabins. Download your maps and this guide ahead of time so they work offline.
Timing Your Visit
Seasons and crowds. Summer is tubing season. Fall, roughly late September through October, brings Oktoberfest and peak leaf color and is by far the busiest and most beautiful time, so book lodging early. Weekdays are noticeably calmer than weekends year-round.
Traveling with a Dog
Helen is dog-friendly. Leashed dogs are welcome at many patios, wineries, and trails, and even on the river with Cool River Tubing. The main exception is Anna Ruby Falls, which does not allow dogs. Policies change, so it is always worth a quick call ahead.
One note on lodging. Mountain Rose cabins are kept pet-free so every guest arrives to a clean, allergen-free home.
